10/26 presentation slides

1.    The topic of my presentation is death penalty, so I created the slides with death group members. Firstly, as a contrast, I used black color for a background, and white for the font. Secondly, as a repetition, I used the same font style, color and kept consistency. Thirdly, as a alignment, I just paid attention to how people can easily to understand. Finally, as proximity, because every word and picture is connected, I put it closely in order to represent the connection. As a whole, I devoted to make it simple.

2.    My members’ slides are so simple that I could see and understand easily. I found the pictures that appeal to emotion, and made me sad. I hope we can present well!

10/20 homework: the way to use Evernote and about C.R.A.P.

1. We learned the way to use Evernote. By Evernote, we can note or memo effectively, so that we can feel as if we make our own Google. The learning potential of it is we can think about what we want to consider by comparing memo or pictures, and can find what we need by checking mark or filing. Web clipper plays an important role when we save some information as we want. For example, you can save full page, bookmark, screenshot, draw lines and protect privacy by mosaic. I would like to use screenshot because I can save only what I need if I use it.

2. I saw the videos about how can we make a good presentation. The important key point is included C.R.A.P. I will explain what it is.
C: Contrast
Creating contrast for elements like font size or color makes them stand out. For example, when the background has darker color, the sentences’ color should be lighter, and vice versa.

R: Repetition
By repeating same text, or font style, color, and size, we can make collaborative production. This cohesive looking website makes more easier for observers to see.

A: Alignment
Appropriate alignment makes the presentation easier to understand. For example, if we want to represent “catching the dreams,” it’s better to put the letters above the boy’s hand, who is jumping toward the sky.

P: Proximity
Proximity of sentences or images tells how they are associated with or not. For example, the closer the sentences, or pictures are, the more they get involved. On the other hand, the farther the sentences, or pictures are away from one another, the less they get involved.

Other things I didn’t know are…
to use
1-7-7 slide
high-resolution
sans serif font rather than serif one
to avoid
using clipart, watermarks cute things, irrelevant images, animations video, or sounds to entertain

4. I will write about death penalty. Because the developed countries that still have death penalty are only Japan and some states in America, I want to know why some countries has and the others don’t. Main reasons argue for it are helping the victims’ families’ feeling, deterrence for harsher crimes, and preventing the accused from committing further crimes. On the other hand, the reasons argue against it are mainly inhumanity, danger of irreversible wrong convictions, and a lot of cost. I hope I could write a better essay than last essay.

Evaluation of Wikipedia and citation by using Zotero

We learned the way to know the quality of the Wikipedia sites in the first place, and also we learned the way to cite by using zotero.

1. I found “Attachment Theory,” which has FA rank. Because I wrote about child abuse in last essay, this site is highly connected to my previous topic. I did not know that we could confirm whether the site of Wikipedia is reliable or not. And at the same time, I realized that the sites which has high rank like FA is so few that we cannot too much rely on most of them. That’s why many teachers don’t like it, though we cannot do it in terms of other websites, too, because we don’t know who is editing them.

2. Regarding In-text citation and works cited, zotero worked so well that I simply thought it is really useful tool. Because I always have a trouble with citation, I am sure that it will be helpful next time. But I had a mistake and I send it to members before I completed it, so I sent it again. (sorry for bother my group members)

How to search 4 databases?

I learned how we can use databases effectively and in what way we can cite easily. There are 4 databases she explained: Gale Virtual Reference Library, Lexis Nexis, ProQuest, and JSTOR.

1.    Gale Virtual Reference Library gathers reliable e-book like dictionaries, so that it is useful when we want to know the definition. She also told us the importance of confirming it first when we write an essay because the word of academic meaning is often different from the word we imagine.
2.    Lexis Nexis includes many newspapers and magazines. Although it is not friendly with Zotero, you would find good articles by using it.
3.    ProQuest has various fields’ academic reports. There are summaries, information and full text.
4.    JSTOR has also various fields’ academic reports, although it is different from ProQuest. While ProQuest has 4000 titles’ reports, JSTOR has 3000 ones which are more academic.

I get used to using Lexis Nexis and knew ProQuest, but I didn’t know the others. It seems still difficult for me to make use of these data bases, but I wish I could do that until I will write a report that we have to write to graduate from ICU.

Also, I am so happy that I could know the useful hints, for example, searching by using and, or, phrase search, and *. I will try to use it and hope I can find good resourses!

Child Abuse Sources

I am going to write about child abuse. I will write mainly 3 things: how children are suffered from abuse, why some parents abuse children, and what kind of things we can do to improve this problem.
Firstly, The Japan Times says, " 51 children died because of child abuse in 2012," although this does not include single mother cases and murder-suicide cases. I was surprised that even though the mothers get married, at least 1 child is killed per a week. Also, I don't know why,  though there are other ways to save children's life like Kounotiri no yurikago when they are too mentally suffered from stress coming from children, they have to kill them.
Secondly, by Laura Davis, we can know what kind of shock the person who receive abuse or how she could survive after she receive sexual abuse from parents. I learned that people who are abused cannot trust anyone because they are betrayed parents who children should have relied on firstly. Also, they are suffered from the trauma when they talk with friends unexpectedly, when they date with someone, and especially when they have a sex. Most of them cannot prevent that, so she encourage such people to survive.
Thirdly, we can know the experience of Masami who experienced child abuse.  The abuse always occurred in the bathroom and her mother was just outside, preparing dinner in the kitchen, so that mother never noticed that she was raped and crying of pain. I was shocked again because this article has reality, and it is so harsh. I respect her because she overcomes that experience and goes against the social pressure that they should hide the fact of their experiences.
To conclude, I could understand there are so many child abuse, though Japan are said to be as one of the most peaceful country or secure country. I want to search more and want to think what we can do.

My survey about newspaper

I heard that more and more people do not read a news paper at all recently. Therefore, I asked 17 people that they often read it or not, added me, and understood how many students who are in the same class read it. There are 4 questions: whether they like to read it, how often they read it, which news papers do their family read, and the news thy were surprised recently.

1.   Do you like to read a newspaper?

I like to read a news paper.

No

9

50%

Yes

9

50%

I was surprised that half of us like to read a newspaper, because I expected that much few people like it and many people know news by watching TV or using the Internet. I am really happy because I like it, too.

2.   How often do you read a newspaper?

Not at all

6

33%

Sometimes

6

33%

Often

4

22%

Every day

2

11%

After I compared the previous question with this question, I noticed that at least 3 people read a newspaper even though they do not like to do it. I guess this is because they know it is important to read, but at the same time, they feel it is troublesome because sometimes the sentences are difficult and make us sleepy. Also, I want to respect 2 people who read it every day since it is hard for me to continue something every day, even if I know it is important.

3.   Which newspapers do you/ your families read?

Asahi

7

39%

Nikkei

5

28%

Mainichi

2

11%

Others

4

22%

My expectation that Asahi is most popular news paper was right. I want to know which newspapers do those who answered “Others,” and I want to try them, too.

4.   Please tell me the recent news that you were surprised and give me the reasons.

This question was open question and they answered in different way, so I will introduce the news which was popular.
The most popular one was about Nisikori, who is a tennis player. He won the game and that result was incredibly surprising especially for Japanese, many media reported that and we felt happy to hear that.

In conclusion, I realized that many people still read a newspaper and my thought was not collect. I want to try to read it everyday and to know what happens in the world now.

Thank you for your corperation, and have a good day!
